The examples given are practical. Bryan Greetham encourages his reader and future essay writer in a number of ways. I have just finished Brainstorming after his suggestions in the book. I am grateful that he is British from a British University, incidentally, since I am doing a distance learning course via a different British University, and all the rules seem to be different from what I learned in college 40 years ago.
And yet he avoids the stuffy theoretical language that seems to characterize many British authors in my course reading. This book contains superficial discussion of the process of writing an essay. Instead of focusing on thinking or writing skills, the author discusses some issues such as planning your study and relaxation time. Overall, there is little useful information for students who want to improve their writing skills.
Great advice for the serious writer, but too complicated for any one who is struggling and in need of rapid improvement. I really wanted to keep it for myself, but needed more of a resource to teach my 16 year old than an in depth study for my own writing. Would be very appropriate for a course of study rather than a reference book. Having looked at many many titles that purport to help students write better essays this is definitely the best.
The author has clearly taught and thought about this topic for some time and the needs of the student come first. His explanations and examples are well outlined, and he gives lots of good reasons why a student should take the advice offered. This is not a book about where to put a comma - this is about how to think, how to develop the skills needed to write well. Although aimed at higher education students this book could easily be used by anyone wanting to write well.
This book provides excellent advice for the person unfamiliar with the UK education system, examination by essay. It is very thorough and includes explanations related to note taking, organizing and revision before the exam as well as essay preparation.
I wish I had it before my first series of exams in Great Britian. It would probably be useful also for those in other areas, where this kind of exam is required, certainly humanities majors. Covers the exam essay as a formal argument to answer a question as well as presenting advice on targeting the specific question. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. Good for those not used to academic essay writing; and those who are more experienced.
One person found this helpful. Another indispensable book purchased whilst studying for a Masters in Albeit the book does make you work. Rather than provide a checklist or a clear structure example, the book is written entirely written in prose. Hopefully, there is a newer edition in which addressed this. I was very disappointed with this item. It was not helpful at all. Report abuse. This is ok if you have time to sit and read it through- page by page.
Im currently in the 1st year of my degree and thought this might help. Unfortunately I just dont have the time required to do this ontop of my studies and assignments, its not a book that you can pick your way through so I will have to leave it until term is over.
